Germany and China Exchange

A Respectful Exchange in Critical Times

Last Friday, I had the opportunity to attend a remarkable event at the German Centre Shanghai. Over 100 guests from China and Germany gathered to listen to a conversation between two fascinating personalities: Rudolf Scharping (Chairman and Founder of RSBK AG, former Federal Minister of Defence and Minister-President) and Martin Benninghoff (China Correspondent of Handelsblatt).

A Necessary Dialogue

The discussion focused on current political and economic developments in Germany and China, as well as the opportunities and challenges shaping future cooperation between the two countries.

For me personally, this evening was a real highlight. In these politically critical times, it was a valuable opportunity—the first in a long time—to hear well-founded opinions, compare perspectives, and meet interesting people in person.

Impressions from the Podium

I was particularly impressed by how confidently and competently Rudolf Scharping responded to all questions. Even when analyzing the complex situation, he made a point of highlighting Germany’s positive aspects and strengths—an important accent in the current debate.

Respectful Exchange

What made this evening special, however, was not just the panel discussion itself, but the dynamic that followed. There was a very intensive, differentiated, and above all, respectful exchange of views. The guests contributed their own questions and viewpoints, leading to a lively and constructive discussion.

The evening concluded with networking and in-depth conversations among the guests and speakers. My conclusion: It is precisely in difficult times that this direct, open dialogue is indispensable.

Many thanks to the German Centre Shanghai for organizing this successful evening!
