Moments in Manila: “Birds of Prey” at ALT Philippines 2026
There are moments in life that fill you with special pride. Today is such a day. While I busy myself with the technology behind vehicles, my eldest son, Ben Brix, shows how to use the camera as a tool to delve deep into the soul and history of a country.
From February 13 to 15, he will present the project “Birds of Prey” (2024), together with the renowned Filipino artist Kiri Dalena, at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, Manila.
A Dialogue Between Yesterday and Today
The video installation, presented by Galleria Duemila, is far more than just a visual experiment. Ben and Kiri worked through a vast archive of over 3,500 photographs from the US colonial period (1887–1907).
The project is a powerful engagement with the history of the Philippines:
- The Deconstruction of the Colonial Gaze: Historical landscape photographs are juxtaposed with Ben’s contemporary video works.
- Artistic Symbiosis: The close collaboration between Kiri and Ben combines documentary sharpness with a deep empathy for the people and the land.
My Connection to the Philippines
Anyone who follows my blog knows that the Philippines holds a special place in my heart. I appreciate the warmth of the people and the cultural diversity of the islands – whether during my professional appointments with organizations like TESDA or privately on my motorcycle, together with my son on our travels.
I am very pleased that Ben is now making such an important contribution to the local and global art discourse right there, in the vibrant metropolis of Manila. His work makes the often invisible legacies of history visible and encourages reflection on how the past shapes our present perception.
“Birds of Prey” can be seen as part of ALT ART 2026. A must-see for anyone currently in Manila who wants to experience contemporary art with historical depth.
I am very happy for Ben and Kiri and look forward to the response to this brave and provocative work!
