Through the Philippines

Between volcanoes, coastlines and the moment: A father-son journey through the Philippines

There are moments in life when the world shrinks to its essence: the sound of a single-cylinder engine, the warm wind on your face, and the knowledge that your partner in the rearview mirror or ahead is riding to the exact same rhythm. Our motorcycle trip through the Philippines this year was more than just a tour – it was a lesson in serenity and a celebration of our shared passion.

The Rhythm of the Islands

Our journey began in Cebu. I was on a Royal Enfield Himalayan and my son on his Classic. Machines perfectly suited to the unpredictable trails of this archipelago – we set off, eventually taking the ferry to Negros.

Experiencing the Philippines by motorcycle means breathing in the country unfiltered. It’s the heat of the coastal roads and the sudden, refreshing coolness of the mountain regions. You encounter completely different roads and paths: from perfectly paved sections to adventurous trails that challenged both us and our machines. We were particularly captivated by the mountain routes. Curves winding through lush greenery and paths that redefine the word “adventure” with every kilometer.

Of volcanoes and hidden bays

One of the highlights was the region around the Kanlaon volcano. The mountain’s majestic presence, nestled in a landscape that appears both powerful and fragile, is truly awe-inspiring. Our journey then took us south via Bacolod to Sipalay.

Sipalay is a place that invites reflection. Standing there on the coast, reviewing the experiences of the past few days and gazing out at the vast sea, you understand why this annual trip has become such a valuable life experience for us. It’s the contrast between the constant movement on the bike and the perfect stillness of nature.

Seeing the world through a lens

This year, our trip had an additional dimension. We used the time to film for one of his projects. This process changes your perspective. You pause where you might otherwise have driven on. You pay attention to the light, the subtle nuances of the culture, the smiles of the people, and the small details along the way. The camera forced us to look even more closely and to internalize the unique qualities of this beautiful country even more deeply.

What remains

We’re back in Cebu City now, the motorbikes are parked, the dust from the streets has been washed away. What remains is the memory of a week full of adventures, interesting encounters along the way, and profound conversations with my son and a few new friends we made.

The Philippines welcomed us with open arms once again. See you next year.
